Police Foil "Fake Kidnapping" Plot Orchestrated by Two Teenagers
Addis Ababa | April 21, 2026
Two teenagers, aged 15 and 16, who were reported missing after leaving for school on April 19, 2026, sparked panic by claiming they had been abducted. The girls contacted their families via telephone, stating that a ransom of 300,000 ETB was required for their release, or their "captors" would harm them.
Following an intensive investigation by the Lemi Kura Sub-City Police Department, the teenagers were located on April 20, 2026, in the CMC area. They were found in the company of two young men and were immediately taken into custody.
Police investigations revealed the following:
Staged Abduction: It was confirmed that the teenagers were not kidnapped but were voluntarily spending time with two male friends.
The Motive: The girls admitted in their statements that the "kidnapping" was a ruse designed to extort money from their families to fund travel expenses for going abroad.
Illegal Accommodations: The individual who rented a room to the minors and their companions has also been detained and is currently under investigation.
The Addis Ababa Police Commission issued a stern warning to hotel owners and lodging providers, reminding them that renting rooms to minors or selling them alcohol is strictly prohibited. Additionally, police urged parents to maintain closer supervision of their children’s daily activities and social circles to prevent such incidents.
